Overview

Physician Affiliate Group of New York (PAGNY) is adding a Genetic Counselor to the group at Kings County Hospital. The Hospital is part of theNYC Health + Hospitals System (NYCHHC). Kings County Hospital operates a world-renowned Level 1 Trauma Center, one of only three in Brooklyn, which serves 2.6 million residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Responsibilities

We are hiring for a full time Cancer Genetic Counselor (CGC), this role is a clinical position - to evaluate cancer patients and at-risk patients and perform genetic assessment/testing for cancer susceptibility genes as appropriate. The CGC will see patients in the Comprehensive Breast Center (CBC) and will be open to seeing patients referred by other cancer specialties throughout the hospital.

    To evaluate recently diagnosed cancer patients, determine need for germline genetic testing, discuss pretest
    counseling, perform genetic testing as deemed necessary and discuss results once these are made
    available.
  • To evaluate at-risk patients, including family members of recently diagnosed patients, determine need for
    germline genetic testing, pre-test counseling, perform genetic testing as deemed necessary and discuss
    results once these are made available.
  • Communicate frequently with patients throughout the testing process - telephone, email, MyChart.
  • Develop education materials for patients and family members re: genetic testing.
  • Work with NYCHH central office in developing referral work queues within KCH network.
  • Work with administrative assistants in order to maintain up-to-date referral work queues, templates and
    practice schedules.
  • Work with clinical staff to ensure proper follow up of patients once seen in practice, and
    ensure correct practice appointments have been made.
  • Maintain prospective databases of evaluated patients.
  • Participate in CBC led clinical research initiatives. Research productivity will be encouraged and expected.
  • Work with CBC nursing staff and develop/maintain procedures to ensure appropriate handling of testing
    samples.
  • Work with KCH mailroom and ensure appropriate handling of specimens to be shipped out of KCH.
  • Communicate with CBC clinical staff (surgeons, mid levels, nurses) as well as referring providers and
    update them on patient status and test results.
  • Actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board.
  • Participate in departmental quality-improvement initiatives to improve clinical processes

Qualifications
  • Current licensed NYS registration certificate
  • Board Eligible/Board Certified in genetic counseling preferred
  • Master's in Genetic Counseling
  • Preferably with 2+ years of experience - however, will consider recently graduated candidates
